Litomyšl (Svitavsko) - A new modern church of the Brethren Church in Litomyšl will be adorned by prominent artists. The abstract sculpture will be created by Karel Malich. Glass artist Václav Cigler will also collaborate on the design of the interior. This was announced today to the journalists by pastor Daniel Smetana. "They are the top experts in the country in their fields. For me, it is amazing that these two artists will be doing it and that people will accept it,” added former mayor Miroslav Brýdl, who is involved in the visual arts. The construction of the church is nearing completion, with the opening planned for the end of November and beginning of December. By then, Malich's sculpture, two circles, will appear on the façade. The black circle will intersect with the white one, representing the symbolism of the victory of light over darkness. "I am thrilled by it; it is a beautiful work, it has an amazing effect. However, people were surprised why we don’t put a biblical verse or a prominent Christian symbol there instead. In the end, they approved it, which I consider a significant breakthrough,” said Smetana. Cigler will modify the interior space, creating an altar table, a pulpit, and a cross for the roof. Originally, a gilded version was considered, but this could be appealing to vandals and thieves. Therefore, the cross will be made of titanium. The cross is unusual for an evangelical church, which the authors do not see as a problem. "My grandfather, an evangelical pastor, would turn in his grave. The church has taken a certain step; we do not side with one or the other. The cross is a Christian symbol,” said Smetana. The church representatives have been striving for the completion of the church since 2008. Designed in the spirit of functionalism by architect Zdeněk Fránek, it features an unusually slanted shed roof, resembling a ramp. The church will serve not only the believers but will also offer multi-purpose club rooms and a communal vestibule. Twice a week, the city will use it as a funeral hall, which has been lacking in Litomyšl.
