Dear Sir or Madam,

We would like to announce that we have submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic for the declaration of Parkhotel (Veletržní 20, Prague 7) as an immovable cultural monument.

The Parkhotel represents an excellent example of late modernism in 1960s architecture in our region and is a pinnacle of Czech hotel architecture. The building ranks among the first structures that, after years of socialist realism and a period of conservative artistic ethos, turned towards a freer modernist architecture for which Czechoslovakia became renowned in the interwar period.

A significant asset of the Parkhotel is particularly its architectonic expression, still preserved today (both in the exterior and interior), including several artistic elements. The building was designed by renowned architects (Zdeněk Edel, Jiří Lavička, in collaboration with Alena Šrámková) in cooperation with leading artists (Irena Dědičová, Jan Hladík, Věra Drnková-Zářecká, Václav Bejček, Josef Klimeš, Jiří Rathouský, Adolf Matura, and others). Among the exceptional features that align it with a central yet relatively rare line of revised international style in the Czech context are notable proportions, above-standard precisely detailed work in the socialist construction industry, noble materials, sensitive yet distinctive integration into the local historical and natural context, and last but not least, a cultivated, in many respects timeless living environment.

Significant parts of the complex (exterior, elements of the ground floor, façades including curtain glass walls, emblem, details, artworks – several tapestries and sculptures or a glass screen in the basement, etc.) have also been preserved in an authentic state, making the building stand out among dozens of demolished or inappropriately modified architectural realizations from the 1960s and 1970s. Thanks to a sensitive reconstruction that took place after 2014, replicas of several lost or damaged interior elements have been added to the hotel’s vestibule, further enhancing the expression of the building and the authentic atmosphere of the place. We believe that these sensitive interventions have served the Parkhotel excellently, should be preserved, and a similar approach should be applied to further renovations under the supervision of specialists in heritage conservation.
