Students and teachers of the Faculty of Architecture have gained a new building after forty years. Two weeks ago, classes for the summer semester began there, and on Tuesday it was officially opened in the presence of the president of the republic. It has become one of the few new school constructions in the country and, after all, one of the few dignified public investment projects.
The editorial team of Archiweb is therefore pleased to present its readers with the latest realization by the studio of Alena Šrámková:

New Building of FA ČVUT

On this occasion, we also asked some of the new users of the building two questions - although with the understanding that their impressions may still be unformed.
We will return to this topic in the future.

1/ What do you think is the greatest advantage of the new building?
2/ What do you think is – if it exists – the greatest untapped opportunity of the new building?

1/ The greatest advantage of the new faculty building is, from a student's perspective, undoubtedly that our school has finally acquired a dignified environment that can inspire its inhabitants to study, brings energy to common academic life, presents and represents high architecture, meaning not only the economical and efficient arrangement of spaces, but real spatial and environmental creation. In particular, I appreciate the generous scale of the internal volumes and openings, their airiness and transparency. For the first time, I entered the building for the defense of diploma theses. You are on the gallery, you see that your classmate is currently defending two floors below, you go to have a look at him. One often feels and sees that studying is a public matter, unlike in the old building where all studying took place in classical classrooms. The school provides conditions for communication, openness, and free thinking. It cannot be said that the building could hinder anyone's intellectual expansion.

2/ Personally, I find the environment of the building's ground floor a bit sparse. The courtyard has a very strong genius loci, but the proposed sculptures by John Hejduk would certainly enrich the character of the ground floor.

1/ Its internal transparency. You can see who, where, and how is studying.

2/ We moved a week ago. It's too early for a response. I don't know yet.

1/ I consider the greatest advantage to be stepping towards a state where students can finally work at school. I firmly believe that this intention will succeed and will be embraced by both students and teachers.
In any case, the environment in which we both navigate has significantly improved.
Students will have a unique opportunity to observe the influence of environmental change on people's behavior and the functioning of the institution. And at worst, they will have a much more cultivated alternative to corridors for many hours of waiting for consultations.

2/ Everyone associates moving to a new building with great resolutions, hopes, and opportunities, both students and teachers. Their utilization is up to them. The new building gives them this opportunity.
However, it is probably somewhat premature to assess the building itself, which has been in operation for only two weeks.

1/ Undoubtedly, the very fact that it exists. We finally have the opportunity to be all together, share a common space, and identify with it. I would like the expectations to be fulfilled and that the Faculty of Architecture becomes a creative, constantly pulsating organism full of life and energy, where every student and educator enjoys spending their (or free) time. For myself, I can say that the spaces where I operate (studio and office) promise this.

2/ It is difficult to assess the building just a few days after its opening. So I will be very personal and share my first impression. I am disappointed with the entrance outdoor courtyard, which feels strict and unfriendly. I fear that even the ground-floor café, without the possibility of direct opening to the outdoors, will not improve this feeling. Similarly, I currently perceive the internal atriums, where I feel lost and exposed, with no desire to linger. However, I hope that this will change after people settle in and the life of the faculty becomes established.

1/ Our new school is spacious, clear, and transparent, robust and, in a way, inspiring... In any case, after NTK, it is another enrichment of the atmosphere at CTU.

2/ The faculty's project is somewhat of a message from an older lady – a wise message to the younger generation. At the same time, it is also a manifestation of certain caution and naivety, especially in the use of modern technologies and achieving current comfort...
