Prague - The first edition of the Czech Architecture Award received 476 architectural works. A jury composed of foreign architects will first select approximately 50 projects, all of which will be presented at the nomination evening. From the ten finalists, the winner will be announced by the organizing Czech Chamber of Architects on November 7 at the Jatka 78 venue. An accompanying exhibition will take place at the DOX center. Zuzana Hošková from the Czech Chamber of Architects informed ČTK about this.
All submitted works can be viewed on the website. The nomination evening will take place on June 14 at the La Fabrika venue.
In addition to architects, newly established academies could also submit works for the competition. According to the organizers, this award will thus cover the entire range of domestic production for the given period. The new award can compete with the well-known but critically scrutinized award from the Association of Architects. Its organizers announced in March that they expect about 90 submitted works.
The Association of Architects has recently faced criticism, especially from young architects. They claim that the association is failing to fulfill its mission and that the prestige of activities, including the Grand Prix of Architects competition and exhibition, is declining. The Grand Prix, which is meant to showcase the best contemporary architecture in the Czech Republic to a wide audience, is increasingly seen by critics as a local event with minimal impact on the general public.
The new chamber competition does not wish to differentiate itself from the Grand Prix, but it does mention that everyone can apply for the new competition without paying an entry fee, making it more accessible to young architects, say the organizers of the award. According to the chamber, the main motive of the exhibition is to present the results of architects' work to the general public, not only in terms of their aesthetic and technical quality but especially in the context of their origin, relationship to the surroundings, and social contribution.
Miloš Parma, the chairman of the Association of Architects, defends the association's activities against criticism by stating that it operates solely on the basis of membership fees, sponsorship donations, and grants. However, this year, according to him, the competition received no grants from either Prague or the Ministry of Culture. He points out that the Czech Chamber of Architects operates with an annual budget of about 24 million crowns, while the association has a budget in the tens of thousands. A few years ago, the competition was organized together by the association, the chamber, and the National Gallery, but after a change in the leadership of the chamber, the two architectural entities, according to Parma, are no longer able to agree.
