Ostrava - The council of the city of Ostrava today approved a public contract for the reconstruction of the historic building of the former slaughterhouse, which is expected to house the city gallery Plato Ostrava in the future. This was stated by the spokesperson of the magistrate, Andrea Vojkovská. The slaughterhouse is to be renovated according to the design of Polish architect Robert Konieczny, who, however, placed third in the architectural competition.

The city did not reach an agreement with the winner of the competition, the Prague studio Petr Hájek Architekti, regarding the terms of the contract, and thus the studio was eliminated from the process. The city received only the winning studio and the Polish architect who took third place expressing interest in the negotiations without announcing the results on the project development, which followed the architectural competition. After unsuccessful negotiations with the winner of the competition, the city began discussions with him.

"Architect Robert Konieczny met all formal requirements and expressed readiness to conclude a contract. Therefore, today the city council decided on the selection of the designer and the conclusion of the contract with KWK Promes architect Robert Konieczny. According to the Public Procurement Act, a fifteen-day period for submitting objections has begun today. Formal conclusion of the contract is only possible after this period expires," said Mayor Tomáš Macura (ANO).

The public contract approved by the council includes, for example, the preparation of an architectural study, various stages of project documentation, and authorial supervision during the reconstruction of the building. The price has been set at a maximum of 14 million crowns excluding VAT.

The city slaughterhouse was established in 1881. In 1994, the city district of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz sold the two-hectare land along with the slaughterhouse building to the company Bauhaus for more than 38 million crowns. The company built its DIY store in close proximity to the slaughterhouse. However, the slaughterhouse fell into disrepair and was never repaired, and the store later also ceased to operate. The city has long sought to regain the heritage-protected slaughterhouse, which it took over last September. It paid 80 million crowns for it and for the former Bauhaus store.
