Ostrava - The Ostrava city hall plans to establish a new market for large farmers' markets in the industrial building Trojhalí. It could be established as early as this year. The central district of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz does not like this idea. According to its representatives, the city should be trying to revitalize the city center, not the area around the giant shopping center.

The mayor's assistant Martin Štěpánek (ODS) claims that the project is indeed aimed at revitalizing the center of Ostrava. "We want the market to be covered and operate year-round. There is good accessibility by car and enough parking spaces," he told reporters today. He added that he personally perceives Trojhalí as part of a wider center.
The deputy mayor of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz, Petra Bernfeldová (the Ostravak movement), does not consider this a good idea. "It's a pity that the city hall has a different view of what the city center is. For us, it is Masaryk Square and its surroundings. Not the area around the shopping center," she stated. According to her, it is unfortunate that the city hall and the district are not pulling together. "If they really wanted to revitalize the center, they could simply elevate the existing market on Černá louka," the deputy mayor said.
Her district already announced at the end of the year that it wants to operate small farmers' markets year-round at Jiráskov Square. They do not intend to back down from this plan. "I believe we will find tenants for four to six stalls and ensure sufficient attendance there," she said. This does not bother Štěpánek. "People will determine for themselves where to go for vegetables or other farm products," he believes.
If the market in Trojhalí, which is currently being reconstructed, comes to fruition, the city would like to have an initial influence on its operation. Therefore, it should be run by the association of legal entities Trojhalí Karolina, of which Ostrava is a member. "We would like to offer the first tenants favorable conditions. Initially, the prices should be lower. Until the project is implemented," said the assistant.
The protected historical buildings of Trojhalí are the only ones that remain on the site of the former coking plant. Trojhalí consists of two halls of the former power plant and one hall of the former central office. The architectural design of the buildings was created by architect Josef Pleskot. The former power plant building is now being transformed into a covered passage square. Exhibition spaces for a new city gallery will be located in other parts.
