Ostrava - National technical monuments in the Lower Vítkovice area in Ostrava will gradually be opened to the public this year. On the day of the spring equinox, that is March 20, Blast Furnace Number One will open its observation route. A symbolic modern countdown will be prepared, marking the relighting of the Blast Furnace, said Jan Světlík, the chairman of the supervisory board of the Lower Vítkovice association and general director of Vítkovice Machinery.

A panoramic inclined skip elevator will be part of the blast furnace, which will travel along the structure of the skip bridge, originally used for transporting iron ore to the furnace. It will now carry tourists to a viewing platform at a height of about sixty meters. A skip elevator is used in metallurgy or mining to transport larger quantities of raw materials. The cabin is suspended on a cable and automatically tips at the upper position. The elevator cabin will be glazed and will transport up to 16 people.
Světlík added that an open day for the Vítkovice Machinery Group is planned for May 1, which will include access to the Lower Vítkovice area, from 08:00 at least until 20:00. "We will showcase the magnificent architecture of the Lower Vítkovice area in all its glory, presenting its unique atmosphere, where the industrial charm of the past merges with the promise of a new future," stated Světlík.
According to Petr Koudela, the executive director of the Lower Vítkovice association, the association is now looking for a new name for the Gas Storage. This is one of the other projects in the area, which is currently being converted into a multifunctional hall based on the design by architect Josef Pleskot. People can send their naming proposals to the email address [email protected]. The authors of the most interesting proposals will receive free tickets to the upcoming concert of Jaromír Nohavica, which will take place in the building together with the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava on May 8. The concert will primarily be intended for those who are involved in the transformation of the Lower Vítkovice area, and it is likely to be repeated for the general public in the autumn. A launch concert for the Janáček May music festival is planned for May 17 in the Lower Vítkovice area, and in July, the Colours of Ostrava festival will also move to these spaces for the first time. Full access to the currently transforming technical monuments is planned for this autumn.
