Pec pod Sněžkou (Trutnov area) - The town of Pec pod Sněžkou wants to build a lookout tower on Hnědý vrch next year, which at a height of 30 meters will surpass all existing lookout towers in the Krkonoš. The construction of the attraction aims to draw visitors to parts of the resort that are not as utilized in summer, thereby relieving the overloaded trails to Sněžka. This was stated by today's Mladá fronta Dnes in the supplement for the Hradec Králové region. A wooden lookout tower with metal elements will rise near the upper station of the cable car on Hnědý vrch. "Tourists will see the panorama of Sněžka, Javor, the center of Pec, and the entire valley up to Velká Úpa from it," said the mayor of the town, Alan Tomášek. Originally, the lookout tower was to be nearly 35 meters tall. At the request of the Krkonoš National Park, however, it was reduced in height so that it would not exceed the surrounding trees and disrupt the panorama of Hnědý vrch. At the same time, KRNAP conditioned the construction on the accessibility of the viewing platform exclusively in the summer season and only during the operation of the cable car. Another Krkonoš lookout tower on the nearby Černá hora measures 25 meters, and the Štěpánka tower at the border of the Krkonoš and Jizera Mountains is even a meter shorter. The only stone lookout tower in the Krkonoš on Mount Žalý measures only 18 meters. The construction of the lookout tower is part of a broader project for the tourist and transport development of Pec pod Sněžkou. This includes, for example, the establishment of a recreational zone between the water reservoir on the Úpa River and the planned lower station of the new cable car to Sněžka. The Pec town hall has already released over four million crowns for the preparation of necessary materials. In the fall, it plans to apply for grants from European Union funds and implement all planned changes next year. "Everything should cost about 50 million crowns, and we expect about a ten percent financial contribution from the town," said Tomášek.
