Prague - The main post office in Jindřišská Street, Prague, will cease to exist if the building is successfully sold within 12 months. The lease agreement for the existing branch's premises will no longer be part of the purchase contract, allowing the new owner to manage the entire space. Up to now, one of the conditions for the sale of the neo-Renaissance building was the preservation of the largest post office in the spacious covered hall. The postal service intends to announce a new tender with altered conditions within a few weeks. Matyáš Vitík, the postal spokesperson, told ČTK today.
As part of the new tender, Czech Post will also no longer offer the building in Jindřišská as a package with the building in Moravská Street, and the Prague city hall will no longer have the opportunity to match the highest bid.
"Following today's meeting of the supervisory board, the documentation for the tender will be prepared, which should be announced within weeks. The minimum price of the property is set at 1.538 billion crowns," Vitík stated. In the previous attempt to sell through a sealed bid method, no one participated in the selection, and the Prague city hall announced that it was no longer interested in the main post office building.
The building was constructed between 1871 and 1874 and has served postal services since its inception. Its first major renovation occurred between 1896 and 1899. It underwent another significant modification between 1912 and 1921. Between 1996 and 1999, the builders completed a general reconstruction of the property. In 1998, it was declared a cultural monument.
In the event of a successful sale, employees from the central building will move to other properties of Czech Post in Prague, such as facilities on Olšanská Street, Ortenovo Square, or Milady Horákové Street.
If the sale is successful, the branch in Jindřišská Street will operate for a maximum of 12 months from the sale of the building. During this time, Czech Post will ensure that postal services are adequately accessible within walking distance from the existing branch, which clients will be able to use in the future.
