Prague - Czech Post offered for sale a building at the corner of Jindřišská Street and Politických Vězňů Street in Prague on the public administration portal. State institutions can express interest in it within 30 days. The minimum price is set at the estimated value of 1.325 billion CZK. Matyáš Vitík, the spokesperson for the post office, said this today to ČTK.

If no one from the public sector shows interest in the building, the company will begin preparing an offer to sell it to other entities. The capital city’s magistrate had previously expressed interest in the building. ČTK is inquiring about the city leadership’s response.

Together with the purchase agreement, a lease agreement will be concluded, under which Czech Post will be entitled to use the covered atrium of the main post office, as well as the premises on the second floor and six parking spaces in the uncovered courtyard.

The interest of the Prague magistrate to participate in potential auctions by Czech Post for the sale of the central branch and other properties was approved by Prague representatives at the end of June. The city then stated that it would prefer a direct purchase of the properties. The magistrate is also interested in a building on Moravská Street in Prague 2.

The extensive Neo-Renaissance building was constructed between 1871 and 1874 and subsequently expanded. In 1998, it was declared a cultural monument. The post office offers a wide range of services in it, with the Czech Post headquarters located in the side wing with an entrance from Politických Vězňů Street. Notably, there are 1,780 mailboxes located in the building. Some of them have retained their original appearance, while others are modern. Czech Post has been located in the building since 1873.

Last week, the post office sold three unnecessary properties in Prague's Krč in an electronic auction. It will receive nearly 400 million CZK for them in total. In an effort to reduce losses, the post office closed 300 branches across the Czech Republic since July this year and announced that it would be disposing of properties. Each of the three offered properties was sold through its own auction. The highest starting bid, over 310 million CZK, was for the building on Na Strži Street.

Czech Post reported a loss of 1.73 billion CZK last year, and this year it could reach up to four billion CZK, prompting it to take cost-cutting measures. By the end of June, it had closed 300 out of a total of 3,200 branches.
