Liberec - Work on the embankment of the Lužická Nisa will continue in the lower center of Liberec next year. The Liberec region will complete the access ramp, which was not included in the original project. The city of Liberec will follow up with its part of the construction. The preparation of the Liberec section has been prolonged due to negotiations over contracts with Povodí Labe, Mayor Jaroslav Zámečník (Mayors for the Liberec Region) told reporters after today's meeting of the city council of Liberec and the region.

The city is currently waiting for the issuance of the building permit. "We anticipate announcing a tender for the construction contractor at the turn of the year and starting work immediately in April, so it could be completed during the next year," said the mayor. The project involves the reclamation of the path along the river; the city hall plans to eliminate the parking lot and expand the adjacent park. There will be a promenade with seating on the left bank.

The embankment is part of a billion-crown project to cultivate the lower center of Liberec. The project began in 2014 when the Liberec region purchased buildings and land adjacent to its headquarters from VÚTS (formerly the Research Institute of Textile Machinery). It paid 125 million crowns for the area of more than 11,000 square meters. The region has invested additional hundreds of millions into the renovation of the buildings. The embankment construction followed the first phase, which included a parking garage, that began last September.

The area surrounding the regional headquarters previously mainly served as a parking lot. Builders are currently finishing its transformation into a place for relaxation and meetings. A neglected park has been revitalized, and a staircase has been built that allows visitors to descend to the river. The project also includes a new direct entrance to the regional office via a footbridge, which was already anticipated in the original design by architect Zdeněk Plesník at the end of the 1960s.

The Liberec region will pay about 150 million crowns for its part of the construction. The price has increased due to some unforeseen modifications. According to Půta, it was discovered, for example, that there are rusted iron structures in the staircase on which the staircase is suspended. Therefore, new ones had to be made. The region also acquired a statue by Semily native Magdalena Jetelová for the space, for which the municipal council released 1.646 million crowns on Tuesday. The ceremonial unveiling, along with the opening of the embankment, is planned for November 17.
