Liberec - Representatives of the Liberec Region and the city of Liberec today presented to the public the project of a waterfront along the Lužická Nisa, which is expected to fundamentally change this area of the lower center of the regional city. The construction is divided into two parts, one to be funded by the region, and the other by the city, together costing up to 200 million crowns. The construction of the first part, the regional section, is set to start this fall, said the Deputy Governor Zbyněk Miklík (Pirates) during the presentation.

Work on the revitalization of the area began last October with the construction of a parking garage for 244 cars next to the regional office, which will remove cars from the land around the office. The contract was won in a public competition by a consortium of companies Metrostav DIZ and OHLA ŽS, with the construction costing the region 233 million crowns including VAT. "The construction has been slightly delayed and should finish in November. The subsequent construction should overlap by about two months," added Miklík. The region estimates the costs for the regional part of the waterfront at 130 million crowns.

According to co-author of the project David Pavlišty from the studio re: architects, the neglected park will be revitalized, a playground will be added, a water feature at sidewalk level, an open staircase to the Lužická Nisa, and a new access to the regional office. "The only structure that 'pops up from the ground' is a refreshment stall, it's a wooden structure with a public toilet clad in corrugated metal. The main thing is the descent to the river, which was the most challenging in preparation; it will allow visitors to descend to the river and wet their feet in the water. A tree will be planted there to create a pleasant climate," the architect said.

The building of the regional office will receive a new access, with a longer access staircase. A paved area will be created in front of the European House building, where a stage can be placed and events held, as well as a new pedestrian bridge across the Nisa to the office. The preservation of the original tubular railing was considered, but it must be replaced with a new one. "The goal was to bring the water closer to the people and build a weir that would raise the water level to a constant level, but the Elbe River Basin Authority categorically rejected this," added the Deputy Mayor for Architecture Jiří Janďourek (Mayors for the Liberec Region).

"We are following up on the regional part; we started later, and we have completed the documentation for the land-use decision. In our case, it’s not about the waterfront; we are cultivating the path on the left side from the perspective of the flow. We will eliminate the parking lot, turning it into a green area that will become part of the adjacent park; a bike path Odra-Nisa is also crucial for us," Janďourek added. The city will revitalize the left bank of the river, creating a promenade with seating and a garden of the Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Area management, connected to the playground.
