Prague - During the planned reconstruction of the tram line in Seifertova Street in Prague's Žižkov district, the city will also adjust public spaces. The city council approved a study today regarding the modifications affecting the street itself and Winston Churchill Square and Sladkovský Square. The plans include the relocation of the Viktoria Žižkov and Lipanská stops. A row of trees with 70 trees is to be added to the street, and the city aims to use rainwater for irrigation of greenery.
The tram line reconstruction will cover the section from the U Bulhara intersection to Chlumova Street. According to the study, all surfaces in the street will be replaced. "The proposal includes expanded sidewalk areas at the corners, which serve as meeting places, as spacious access to pedestrian crossings and areas for crossing and for urban furniture," states the document.
The modifications will also relate to the planned relocation of tram stops. The Viktoria Žižkov stop (formerly Husinecká) is set to be moved to ensure better transfers to buses, shifting it west towards Winston Churchill Square. Lipanská will also be moved west, as its current location, according to the city hall, is too close to the neighboring Olšanské náměstí stop, and the new one will provide better accessibility for local residents.
Winston Churchill Square is expected to remain in the same layout as before, but the road leading on the eastern side of the area will disappear. "The removal of the road is complemented by the bidirectionality of U Rajské zahrady street," states the study. The space with the Churchill statue should be better connected to the façade of the Radost House (formerly the union house) with the help of an elevated crossing. A gathering space with a drinking fountain is to be created near the relocated Viktoria Žižkov stop, and the sidewalk connecting the stop with the University of Economics building is also to be expanded.
Changes are also expected in Sladkovské náměstí, where the Lipanská tram stop will be relocated. Greenery in front of the church will be removed to ensure space for boarding and disembarking from the trams. "This full-fledged gathering space, which will contribute to the revitalization of the square, will be enhanced with seating furniture and a water feature," states the study. Adjustments are expected in the western part of the square designated for seating and in front of the Karel Sladkovský Gymnasium. Existing grassy areas between the church and the gymnasium will be replaced with perennial flower beds with trees.
The preparation of the study was overseen by the city’s Institute of Planning and Development (IPR). In the past, it also prepared a conceptual design for the new appearance of the eastern part of Seifertova and Táboritská streets. The Prague 3 city hall also commissioned a design for modifications of Olšanské náměstí, Táboritská, and Ondříčkova streets.
