Prague - Prague will repair the heritage-protected Old Town Market Hall. The reconstruction will cost 336 million crowns. Today, the city council approved the call for public procurement. By the completion of the reconstruction, it should be clear how the building will be further utilized.

If the condition of the Old Town Market Hall, which dates back to 1894, is not addressed by the city in the long term, it risks irreversible damage and an increase in maintenance and repair costs. At the same time, its current form is deemed unsatisfactory by the city council and needs to be modified.

Two years ago, the city leadership wanted to sign a contract with a private company to repair the building and then operate it for 25 years. According to the material approved today, the reason for changing the approach was concerns that the chosen company might lack sufficient knowledge about the reconstruction of the heritage-protected building and experience in leasing and managing real estate.

The market hall is located in a courtyard bordered by the streets of October 28, Rytnířská, Perlová, and Na Můstku. The ground floor of the heritage-protected building currently serves as a shopping center. Individual shops and restaurants are fitted into the historical building. For the average visitor to the shopping center, the heritage value of the market hall is only reminded by the decorated passage from Rytnířská Street. Beyond that, people can only see a portion of the roof structure of the building through the built-in walls and ceilings of the shops, which reveals a glass view in one spot.
