Prague - After more than two years of renovations, the southern gardens of Prague Castle will open to the public today. The extensive reconstruction has returned the area to its original form, as designed by architect Josip Plečnik in the 1920s.
President Václav Klaus and his wife Livia will ceremoniously open the renovated gardens at 10:00 AM. Their guides will represent historical figures - the daughter of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, Alice, or Emperor Rudolf II. However, the gardens will be accessible to the public only from 12:00 PM. This was reported by the press office of the Castle.
The gardens of Prague Castle consist of a ring of six gardens around the entire castle complex. The extensive reconstruction of the southern gardens was initiated about three years ago due to a sewer failure, which threatened to cause a landslide in the waterlogged gardens.
Restorers have aimed to return the area to its original state from the Masaryk era. They repaired the lookout that collapsed in the second half of the 20th century and was subsequently reduced in size. Other prominent features of the gardens have also undergone reconstruction - the stone pyramid and basin, obelisk, pavilions, and sculptures.
