Brno - Construction of what will likely be the tallest skyscraper in the Czech Republic will begin this autumn in Brno's South Center. The AZ Tower will stand at 109.5 meters, a height that no already constructed building has reached. The developer, Properity, wanted it to be even taller, but that wasn’t possible as it would disrupt flight levels, writes today's edition of Brno's MfDNES.

According to initial plans, the building was supposed to be around eighty meters tall and should have already been under construction by now. "Originally, we wanted to start construction in mid-2008. However, when Mayor Onderka saw the plans, he said he would prefer if the building were 111 meters tall. So we increased the height of the skyscraper, but it could only go up to 109.5 meters," said Jiří Maršálek, the managing director of the investor, to the newspaper.
Changes in the project caused a six-month delay, and it took additional months to secure the necessary permits. Currently, a tender for the construction contractor has been announced. Eight bidders have entered thus far, and the winner will be announced at the end of June.
The building will have thirty floors, most of which will be occupied by offices and retail spaces, including a large car showroom. The last six floors will feature luxury apartments with views of Brno. According to the investor, the project is already 27 percent booked.
