Prague - Trams will operate in today's car lane on Wenceslas Square in Prague upon their return to the upper part. In the past, the tracks were in the center of the square. Modifications are expected to begin in 2022 and the work should take about a year. City officials and architects told journalists today. In addition to tracks in the upper part of the square, trees will be added and the sidewalks will be widened. Trams stopped operating on the square at the beginning of the 1980s. The architectural competition for the transformation of the entire square was won by the Cigler-Marani office more than ten years ago.
"The tracks will not run in the center of the square as they used to. On the contrary, we want to create a quality public space there. The tracks should run along the edges, essentially in the area where cars currently drive. When the trams return, it will allow us to transform the space that we associate with taxi drivers and street traders back to the locals," said Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Prague Yours).
According to the original plan by Cigler-Marani, trams were supposed to return to their former route in the center of the square. This will now change. "The roads will be shared for cars and trams, and the center of the square is designated for pedestrians. A 15-meter wide space has been created there," said architect Vladimír Vacek. The intersection of trams with the north-south thoroughfare will not complicate car traffic, according to Scheinherr.
In the upper part of the square, a second row of trees will be added, parking spaces will be reduced, and the central area will be expanded compared to the original plan. "So a standard demonstration can take place there, and if necessary, the trams can stop," said Deputy Mayor Petr Hlaváček (for TOP 09).
Based on the revised study, the city will now have documentation prepared necessary for obtaining zoning decisions and building permits. "I expect that by the end of 2021 we could have all the necessary permits. We could start construction at the beginning of 2022, and it could be completed by the turn of 2022 and 2023," said Scheinherr. According to estimates, costs should amount to around 250 million crowns, the exact amount is not known.
In the spring of next year, reconstruction of the lower part of the square from the intersection with Vodičkova and Jindřišská streets towards Můstek should begin. "It is clear that this place needs revitalization. There are few areas as neglected as the lower part of Wenceslas Square," said Hlaváček.
