Prague - The tram line in the upper part of Wenceslas Square will be built by Eurovia CS for approximately 1.24 billion crowns excluding VAT. The construction will take about three years. Daniel Šabík, head of the communication department of the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP), informed ČTK today. Trams operated in the upper part of the square until 1980, and the previous city leadership decided to bring them back. The DPP anticipates the start of construction in the spring of next year.

According to Šabík, the company evaluated the six bids submitted for the tender, with 80 percent based on price and 20 percent based on the construction duration. He stated that the difference between the highest and lowest bid was more than 250 million crowns. All six bidders similarly indicated a construction period of 1,095 days, or three years, Šabík added.

Compared to the original state, according to earlier information, the tracks will be on the sides of the square and a promenade will be created in the center. Workers will repair sidewalks and road surfaces, plant greenery, renovate the Museum Metro station, and a subterranean tank for rainwater collection will be built. The city also plans to reduce car traffic on the square, with vehicles partially using the tram tracks.

Prague is also planning to construct another line that will lead from the National Museum around the main train station to Bolzanova Street. This construction is part of an architectural competition, in which the city, together with the Railway Administration, is selecting the design for the reconstruction of the new check-in hall and the surroundings of the main station. The results are expected to be announced around mid-next year.

Wenceslas Square is 682 meters long and approximately 60 meters wide. The reconstruction of the lower part of the square began in 2020, which the city mostly completed last autumn. Subsequently, work continued on two smaller areas by the tracks from Jindřišská to Vodičková Street, which have already been prepared for the construction of the tram line in the upper part.
