Prague - The municipality of Prague 1 has set the principles for modifications to Wenceslas Square. They are in accordance with the winning study of the future appearance of the space. These principles should be followed in any construction activities on the square, representatives of the municipality said to reporters today. For example, there should not be permanent parking spaces for cars on the square, and the width of the sidewalks should prevail over the roadway. The placement of greenery should be based on the proposal for a double row of trees. Lighting poles should be built to illuminate both the roadways and the sidewalks. "The best idea was selected in the competition. There must be a directive to move forward," said Deputy Mayor Petr Burgr (KDU-ČSL). According to Deputy Mayor Jana Příhodová (ODS), the design work should be based on the winning study. Last year's competition for the future appearance of the square was decisively won by the proposal from the Cigler Marani Architects studio. The expert jury highlighted that the study is grounded in the history of the square, while being contemporary and very sensitive. The proposal adds a second row of trees to the square, leaving the center of the area for a pedestrian promenade or tram line. It expands the sidewalks, and according to the study, parked cars should disappear from the square. The proposal also limits the number of stalls. Wenceslas Square can gain a new appearance after meeting several conditions. According to the councilors of Prague 1, underground garages must be created under the space, the so-called north-south highway in front of the National Museum must be abolished, and there must be agreement on a potential tram line running through the square. Burgr estimates that it will take seven to ten years.
