Třebíč - The Třebíč city hall wants to make changes to the central Karlovo náměstí, with the aim of bringing people back to the city center. The square, which occupies 2.5 hectares and is among the largest in the country, is currently largely used for parking. Proposals for its improvement will arise from a study commissioned by the city council to architects. Deputy Mayor Pavel Pacal (For Třebíč) said this to journalists today. Experts have been tasked with proposing adjustments to the square that can be implemented in phases. "This means it shouldn't be one big package costing several hundred million crowns followed by years of waiting for financial resources to become available," said Pacal. He added that the city hall wants the square to be more attractive so that people will return to it. "It shouldn’t just be a transit point for buses and a parking area for cars," he stated. The square as it currently exists in the historic center of Třebíč took shape in the second half of the 1960s. "In the past, it was a uniform area covered with so-called cobblestones," noted city hall spokesperson Ivan Přibík. According to Pacal, the planned revitalization should remove some defects, including the tilted sidewalks in the upper section. He believes that it won’t be possible to eliminate cars from the square. "The city's location practically does not allow for the elimination of automotive traffic," he stated. However, experts should consider whether the square might benefit from one-way traffic management. The city will pay 50,000 crowns for the study. Based on it, further documentation necessary for the transformation of the square will be developed. Revitalizing historic squares has been successfully accomplished in recent years in the Vysočina region, for example in Havlíčkův Brod. The project of approximately 80 million crowns was carried out with the help of a European grant.
