Třebíč – The long-prepared reconstruction of Karlovo náměstí in Třebíč has received a building location decision. Construction could begin in the autumn of next year. In rough estimates, the city is counting on an investment of around 100 million crowns, spokesperson for the city hall Irini Martakidisová said today.

"This is a long-term plan of the city that has never been realized; this is the third attempt, and until now it was not possible to obtain a zoning decision, until now," Martakidisová said.

According to her, Karlovo náměstí is a generous space where the surfaces and the engineering networks beneath them have worn out. "Through revitalization, we want to eliminate inappropriate interventions, especially the height differences between the areas, restore the social and representative functions of the square, and improve the comfort of staying," the spokesperson added. The project documentation has so far cost the city hall about 1.5 million crowns.

The proposal was prepared by the Brno studio Ateliér RAW, s. r. o. It will also work on the next stage of the project documentation. The visible change will be new surfaces for the sidewalks, the establishment of resting areas near the new fountains, furniture, new lighting, and greenery. The square, covering over 23,000 square meters, will be surrounded by a new alley of 42 ornamental pear trees. Five maples are also planned to be planted, four of which will be near the statue of Cyril and Methodius, which dominates the square.

Except for the main road running along the northern side of the square, which will be asphalted, the square will be paved with granite paving. The use of the current pavement, which is presently only in the central part of the square, is being considered. The unification of the surface is intended to help minimize the height difference between the roadway and the sidewalks. Curbs should not be higher than ten centimeters. The paving will be accentuated with bronze plates marking historical milestones in the city's history.

Traffic calming will be aided by a new traffic organization. For most cars, the square will no longer be passable; entry and exit will only be allowed through Jejkovská Gate at its eastern end. Jihlava Gate on the opposite side will only be used by public transportation. A special regime will apply for deliveries and residents. It will also be possible to continue using Hassko and Přerovská streets for exiting the square.

The exact sequence of work has not yet been established, but it is likely to start on the northern, lower side of the square. The work is expected to last for two years.

A novelty in the square will be a pair of fountains. However, their design is not part of the proposal prepared by the Brno studio. The city has already initiated an architectural competition for the fountain, which is expected to enliven the western part of the square. The futuristic design of a levitating circle by the Prague studio H3T architekti s. r. o. won.
