Beroun - A new cultural and social center is planned to be built within three years in the Na Ostrově area of Beroun. The three-story center is to be created by converting the industrial facility of a grain mill, which currently houses an operational bakery in its basement. The renovation of the landmark Pekárna U Křížů will cost the owners up to 50 million crowns, and the city supports their plans. This was announced to reporters by Deputy Mayor Tomáš Havel. "The city can be a partner in the project and possibly contribute financially to its operation," Havel told ČTK, stating that the community center could fulfill the cultural needs of Beroun. A multipurpose hall is to be created here, which can be used for musical and theatrical performances, something that, according to the deputy mayor, the city currently lacks. An exhibition gallery will also be established here, and weddings and corporate training could be held in this space. Local civic associations, the Sunflower Mother's Center, and the House of Children and Youth would also utilize the newly created spaces. There should also be a restaurant with a terrace. Actor Tomáš Hanák, who lives in nearby Nižbor, is also collaborating with the owners on the renovation of the grain mill. "We liked his idea and vision for the use of the building; we will bring the project to a successful conclusion with him," said company manager Martin Kudláček. A selection process for the designer of the bakery renovation has already taken place. Work on the project documentation is currently underway. "The study proposal should be ready by the end of the year so that an application for European funding can be submitted," said Havel, adding that the owners aim to obtain a building permit by June of next year. The project also includes the revitalization of the entire island, its accessibility, and restoration to the original park-like form known from the 1920s. "The most interesting part of the project is the construction of a new pedestrian bridge across the Berounka River, which will connect the community center with the city center," noted city architect Dana Vilhelmová.
