Brno - The construction of new underground garages began today in Brno with a ceremonial laying of the foundation stone. The investor is the city-owned company Brněnské komunikace. The underground garages are expected to cost around a quarter of a billion crowns. Representatives of the company informed journalists about this today. The garages will be built at a location where the Janáček Cultural Center is planned to be established in the future. However, funding for the concert hall, which is estimated to cost around half a billion, is still lacking. According to the director of the Brno Philharmonic, Marie Kučerová, the concert hall project has the support of the current coalition in Brno. "Let’s hope it doesn’t stop at just garages," Kučerová stated. She mentioned that the idea for the concert hall has been considered since 1956 when the Brno Philharmonic was established. The ensemble has over 100 musicians and has been living in makeshift conditions since then, performing in the Besední house and the Janáček Theatre. Deputy Mayor Matěj Hollan (Žít Brno) told ČTK today that "a lot of work needs to be done" on the concert hall project. "We have a lot of negotiations ahead with the region, the state, and companies. The city is investigating what funding options are available," Hollan stated. According to him, the coalition aims to reach a stage of issued building permits and secured financing before the elections. He added that it will be necessary to slightly modify the project, which is about ten years old. According to Brno Mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO), the construction of the garages that started today will help free up streets in the city center and give drivers the opportunity to "park in a reasonable manner." The garages will have space for 191 cars. The new underground parking lot will be created in place of the current outdoor parking area between Veselá and Besední streets, with an entrance from Besední street. There will be related restrictions during the construction. The first part of the project includes demolition work and hydrogeological surveys. The capacity of the existing parking lot will be limited to 75 spaces during this time. After the survey is completed in June, the parking lot will be completely closed due to the construction of the underground parking garage. However, it is possible to park elsewhere in the center. "During the construction, we recommend that drivers park their vehicles on Kopečná street, in the Rozmarýn parking garage, or they can also leave their car in the underground parking near the Janáček Theatre," stated Luděk Borový, the general director of Brněnské komunikace. The new parking garage will have three underground and one ground floor. The construction of the parking garage will take 25 months. The contract was awarded to a consortium of construction companies OHL ŽS, a.s., UNISTAV a.s., and STRABAG a.s.
