Modern History of Urban Planning in Prague

May 24, 2012, 7:30 PM

Architectural historian Martina Flekačová will give an overview of the history of Prague's urban planning institutions throughout the 20th century. From the establishment of the State Regulatory Commission (1920) through the Planning Commission during the Protectorate, the building institutions of the 1950s, to more than thirty years of the Office of the Chief Architect. The history is definitely less black-and-white than it may seem when viewed through a political lens.

Civic Association Kruh has been organizing public events and lectures focused on current developments in architecture since 2001. The goal of the lectures and discussions is to facilitate a dialogue about quality Czech and world architecture and architectural creation to broader segments of the public - i.e., beyond a narrow circle of experts and architecture students. Kruh has already organized more than one hundred lectures featuring notable and emerging Czech and foreign architects and architectural theorists, two film festivals on architecture, and the exhibition Profession: Architect. It regularly publishes anthologies of Texts on Architecture. The Civic Association Kruh is also the initiator of Architecture Day, which took place for the first time in October 2011 and had a surprising turnout – approximately 3,000 people.
