SOMA, Unclear Formations

SOMA understands architecture as a constant search and as a field for experiments. The activities of this group range from the development of the latest strategies in digital design to the application of theory and advanced geometries. Rather than expressing fixed meanings, SOMA engages with compelling ambiguity, allowing for a multitude of individual interpretations. The connotation of their name (Greek for body) is thus dual. SOMA understands architecture itself as a body that has the potential to transform and change. The name also relates to space as an atmospheric interaction between the body and its environment.

The SOMA studio from Austria was founded in 2007 by four partners: Kristina Schinegger, Stefan Rutzinger, Martin Oberascher, and Günther Weber. They have received numerous awards in international competitions. Based on one of them, they realized a pavilion for Expo 2012 in Yeosu, South Korea, last year. Their other recent projects include the expansion of the Bauakademie building in Salzburg and a pavilion for the contemporary music festival Salzburg Biennale. SOMA is based in Vienna and Salzburg. The SOMA studio represents a direction of parametric architecture that is not entirely common in the Czech Republic.
