How has the current pandemic crisis influenced the lived environment? Can it be viewed as an opportunity, or do the negatives outweigh it? How are the changes (home office, digitization, etc.) reflected in architecture? Which projects have (not) been realized and what awaits us in the future? The discussion presentation will feature Martin Hejl (KOLMO.eu / Loom on the Moon), Bára Šafářová (University of Washington, Tacoma), and Osamu Okamura (Dean of the Faculty of Art and Architecture of the Technical University of Liberec).

Moderator: Helena Huber-Doudová (curator, NGP)
Date: January 25, 2021, 6:00 PM
Location: FB NGP
Duration: approx. 70 min

NGP On Air | Contemporary Art and Architecture is a series of online discussion presentations (not only) about the impact of the pandemic and new opportunities in the context of art and architecture. It is not about a return to "how it used to be," but about the question of "how else" and better? The topics arise – if live audiences and public spaces are restricted for a longer period, what other methods of communication, space, and representation can be created? Will works begin to take on new forms? What trends in art and architecture will be strengthened and which will weaken?
In a regular monthly interval, the curators of the Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art NGP, Helena Huber-Doudová and Adéla Janíčková, will present architects and artists, their planned (and canceled) projects. The subsequent joint discussion will create a picture of the current experience among creators, outlining the context at both personal and societal levels (e.g., regarding the support of architecture and art in the Czech Republic and other countries).

Osamu Okamura is the Dean of the Faculty of Art and Architecture of the Technical University of Liberec (FUA TUL). He is a former editor-in-chief of the architectural magazine ERA 21. In the past, he served as the program director of the international festival and conference for more livable cities, reSITE, curator of the European project Shared Cities Creative Momentum, performer, and is a member of the board of the Czech Architecture Foundation as well as various architectural expert juries and committees.

Bára Šafářová teaches urbanism and urban design at the University of Washington Tacoma. She is a graduate of the doctoral program in architecture at Texas A&M University, USA. Her dissertation focused on socio-economic segregation of cities and colonies at the border between the United States and Mexico. Her broader interest includes the role of architecture and urbanism in the spatial discrimination of minorities. She began her studies at FUA in Liberec, then transferred to the University of East London. She completed her master's studies in architecture at London Metropolitan University and urban planning at Texas A&M University. In London, she worked for several years in architectural and design studios specializing in residential projects and so-called environmental branding of shopping centers and airports.

Martin Hejl is the chief architect of KOLMO.eu and co-founder of the multimedia studio Loom on the Moon. After studying at FUA TUL, he briefly worked in Copenhagen at BIG and subsequently at OMA in Rotterdam, where he focused primarily on international urban planning projects (Moscow, Doha, Brussels, etc.). After returning to Prague, he specializes in audiovisual and multimedia productions, collaborating with various institutions such as Czech Television, the National Museum, the Museum of the Capital City of Prague, and the National Gallery Prague. He was the author of the Czech exhibition at the 2014 Venice Biennale of Architecture and has taught at FUA TUL and Archip.
