The cross-country skiing section in Deštné in the Orlické hory has a new facility with a modular core this winter

The Wikov SKI Skuhrov association has been raising successive generations of successful athletes for nearly 70 years. The ski area in Deštné in the Orlické Mountains had long been in need of suitable facilities, which were lacking for athletes, coaches, and other club officials. Eventually, a lodge was created, whose design is inspired by traditional mountain buildings in the surrounding area. However, the core of the lodge is not traditional. It consists of modules from KOMA, hidden under a wooden envelope.

Advantages of Modular Solution

When the club's leadership began to consider building a new facility, its vice-chairman Miloš Zeman proposed utilizing the possibilities of modular construction. In addition to his personal experience with module building, good experiences with the use of a modular community center in the town of Dubí, designed by KOMA MODULAR and serving local residents since last year, also served as inspiration. The speed of construction and the lower financial demands compared to traditional building methods were crucial factors in selecting the modular solution for the building.

Architectural Expression of a Traditional Mountain Lodge

One of the first questions that arose in connection with the application of modules was how to address the limitations imposed by the planned building's location in a protected landscape area. Local regulations required a wooden façade and a gable roof shape. The construction was taken over by Verner Domy, which has many years of experience with modular building methods. The core of the lodge consists of six modules set on a concrete foundation. The assembly of the modules forms the basic functional and spatial unit, but the final shape of the lodge is determined by its external envelope. This is comprised of a classic roof structure with a metal roofing, while the perimeter structure consists of lathing attached to the modules with wooden cladding made of charred pine. The space between the laths also serves as an additional layer of thermal insulation.

Simple Functional Layout

The two-story lodge building corresponds in mass to the traditional constructions found in the Orlické Mountains protected landscape area. On the ground floor, the designers placed an entrance hall with a common room, two separate cells for the officials' facilities, and sanitary facilities. In the attic, a relatively large space was created for storing necessary materials needed for maintaining the cross-country ski trails and for organizing ski races, courses, and training camps.
The wish of all members of Wikov SKI Skuhrov is for the next ski season to bring ideal snow conditions so that the new club lodge can showcase all its qualities.
