Presentation of the anthology Denise Scott Brown In Other Eyes: Portraits of an Architect with editor Frida Grahn (Zurich, in-person), Mary McLeod (New York, via Zoom), and Denise Scott Brown (Philadelphia, via Zoom).
Denise Scott Brown (born 1931, Nkana) is one of the most influential thinkers of our time in the fields of architecture and urbanism. She is best known as the co-author of the book Learning from Las Vegas (1972), a canonical text that addresses architectural communication in a new type of automobile-oriented urban landscape. The anthology Denise Scott Brown In Other Eyes: Portraits of an Architect (Birkhäuser, 2022) is published for the 50th anniversary of the release of Learning from Las Vegas. Twenty-five new contributions from leading architectural historians and practitioners—including Joan Ockman, Sylvie Lavin, and Jacques Herzog—offer new scholarly insights into unknown aspects of Scott Brown's life and work, such as her intellectual formation across three continents, her research on the determinants of urban form, her interest in social factors, and her use of urban patterns and forces as tools for architectural design.
Frida Grahn will provide attendees with an overview of the book and highlight the conceptual contributions of Denise Scott Brown, her distinctive voice, and her profound influence on architectural education and design. Professor Mary McLeod and Denise Scott Brown will join us via Zoom.
Frida Grahn is an architect and architectural historian based in Zurich. She holds a master’s degree in architecture and a master’s degree in the history and theory of architecture from ETH Zurich. Her writings have appeared in Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Archithese, Werk, Bauen+Wohnen, Wolkenkuckucksheim, and the Swedish architecture review Arkitektur. In addition to her work as an architect and project manager in Swiss architectural firms, she has lectured at universities in Switzerland, Sweden, and Germany. She was a co-curator of the exhibition Territory as Palimpsest: André Corboz at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio (Università della Svizzera italiana), where she is writing a doctoral dissertation titled Swiss Reception of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, 1970–2000. She is the editor of the anthology Denise Scott Brown In Other Eyes: Portraits of an Architect (Birkhäuser 2022) and initiated the academic symposium Denise Scott Brown: A Symposium at Yale School of Architecture in February 2023.
