Cvernovka - results of the international architectural-urban competition

The company YIT Slovakia announced on September 5, 2016, an international architectural and urban planning competition for the conceptual and functional design of the former Bratislava Cvernova factory site. The company invited architectural studios, mostly from Slovakia and the Czech Republic, based on their previous experience with projects of similar significance and scale. Out of 12 invited studios, 10 submitted proposals.
A new district is to be developed in the area of the former industrial site, which will connect the historical legacy of the location with new architecture while functionally incorporating the national cultural monument - the former Pradiarne building, which is currently undergoing reconstruction and conversion preparations.
The winner of the architectural and urban planning competition was the architectural studio Compass Architekti from Bratislava. According to the expert jury, which ultimately decided unanimously on the winner, the victorious authors brought a clear solution for the site in line with the assignment and simultaneously provided a concept that allows for further development of the area. The proposal offered one of the best urban design solutions in the competition and highlighted the heritage-protected Pradiarne building through a new public space – a square. Based on the results and competition conditions, YIT Slovakia will now proceed to negotiations with the winner aimed at completing the study and processing the documentation for the zoning decision.
The second place in the competition, along with a financial reward, was awarded to the studio A69 architekti, and the third place to the studio GutGut. The jury also decided to award an honorary prize to the architectural studio Chybik Kristof for the enthusiasm of the author team, supported by the story of the memory of the historical profile of the area, which brought an extraordinary solution.

1st place
Proposal No. 7: COMPASS

Author team:
Ing. arch. Juraj Benetin, Ing. arch. Matej Grébert, Ing. arch. Peter Dostál, Ing. arch. Marcel Vadík

Written evaluation of the proposal: The professionally mature author team presented a balanced competition proposal, representing the best urban quality in the competition. The expected block development offers quality of life for residents, segregation of public and semi-public spaces. The site development solution is diffuse to all surrounding structures, with the square highlighting the dominant former Bratislava Cvernova factory known as Pradiarne. The authors, who are well aware of the development trends in Bratislava, respond to traffic on Košická street by minimizing and restricting access to service roads in the area. A comprehensive view of the phased development, including solutions for static transportation above the stable groundwater level, is the sought-after solution by the organizer. The proposal consistently addresses the lighting conditions in the area. The refined urban concept contrasts with the mass composition of individual buildings, sections with a distinct vertical profiling that respects lighting requirements. Nevertheless, the submitted visualizations, from the perspective of a casual observer, provide a sense of interesting, intricate micro-urban spaces. The architectural study of selected buildings does not lag behind the overall submitted quality of the proposal.

2nd place
Proposal No. 2: A69 – architects

Author team: Boris Radčenkov, Prokop Tomášek, Jaroslav Wertig

Co-authors: Tereza Kupková, Lukáš Komín, Tomáš Koňařík, Pavla Enochová

Written evaluation of the proposal: This is a unique urban concept in the competition emphasizing segmentation, diversification of spaces and perspectives. The idea of a garden city with the profiling of individual houses, squares, and courtyards always surprises with its diversity, intimacy, and functional distinctions. The concept is a modern parallel to historical structures of European medieval towns. It is an open pedestrian area with a natural assimilation of the national cultural monument Factory. The connecting bridge to the shopping mall AS Mlynské Nivy is an advantage. Conversely, the exclusion of calm traffic, at least in some parts, is lacking. The apartment buildings do not emerge from the scale of the surrounding development. They represent architecturally diverse objects, creating an apparently chaotic but homogeneous directionally neutral urban space. The complexity of interactions, however, presents a risk for addressing conditions in the area. Particularly critical seems to be managing lighting requirements. The proposal does not account for significant vertical mass. The positioning of the apartment building opposite the bus entrance and exit is not considered a fortunate solution. The authors presented a comprehensive view of the phasing of buildings in connection with underground garage buildings.

3rd place
Proposal No. 5: GUTGUT

Author team: Ing. arch. Lukáš Kordík, Ing. arch. Roman Žitňanský, Ing. arch. Števo Polakovič, Ing. arch. Tomáš Vrtek, Ing. arch. Jana Benkova, Ing. arch. Matej Honč, Ing. arch. Alan Prekop, Ing. arch.Simona Tóthová, Ing. arch.Hana Laššová, Ing. arch. Martin Kvitkovský, Ing. arch. Dávid Alena, Ing.arch. Michal Marcinov, Ing.arch. Nina Bartošová, Mgr. PhD. Pavel Šuška

Written evaluation of the proposal: The urban concept of the proposal is a logical analogy of the proven structure of "500 apartments". It is a classic block development with very modest, rational shaping. The simplicity of form contrasts with the division of spaces, functional diversification, and social diversity, and thus the proposal appears poor and fails to inspire. The dominance of the movement of residents in the S-J direction is presented as the takeover of formal characteristics of the surrounding developments and an attempt to separate from the mall AS Mlynské Nivy.

Award
Proposal No. 3: CHYBIK-KRISTOF ASSOCIATED ARCHITECTS

Author team: Ing. arch. Michal Krištof, Ing. arch. Ondřej Chybík, Ing. arch. Peter Chaban

Co-authors: Ing. arch. Matej Štrba, Ing. arch. Martin Holý, Ing. arch. Thomas Julian Ivanov, Ing. arch. Tomáš Babka, Ing. arch. Adam Jung, Ing. arch. Zuzana Pelikánová, Ing. arch. Jan Stolek, Bc. Iva Mrázková

Written evaluation of the proposal: The organizer of the competition decided to award a prize for the enthusiasm of the author team supported by the story of the memory of the historical profile of the area, which brought an extraordinary solution. BCT was somewhat of an island in the space of the Bratislava – Ružinov district, a kind of "superblock," which in the new proposal is characterized by diversity, variety of spaces and functions. The authors build on original forms, construction elements, and shapes.
