Jaroměř (Náchodsko) - Jaroměř will announce an architectural competition at the end of August for the design of a new bridge over the Elbe River. The original bridge was damaged by flooding in early June, and it was necessary to demolish it. Construction of the new bridge is expected to begin next year. Jiří Klepsa, the mayor of Jaroměř, said this to ČTK today. “The city council has already approved the conditions for the architectural competition, and we expect to announce the competition at the end of August. We would like to receive proposals by the end of October, which will then be evaluated by a jury, and on November 7, the city council will decide,” said Klepsa. According to him, the city will try to start the construction of the bridge in the middle of next year. The city prefers to maintain the architectural design of the bank pillars without support in the riverbed, and the entire bridge should be steel. According to Klepsa, it is still premature to talk about costs. “According to rough estimates from experts, 15 million crowns excluding VAT should be sufficient for the construction,” he stated. The swollen Elbe River split the pillar of the original bridge in the middle of the river at the beginning of June, and an iron footbridge also collapsed from the bridge. The bridge, which was particularly a link between the Na Ostrově school and the main square, was built in 1884, with a side footbridge added in 1931. After the flood and the removal of the original bridge, the town hall considered building a temporary bridge, but in July, it abandoned its plan due to the high cost of temporary bridging.
