Sydney - The world-famous opera in Australian Sydney has come up with a new idea to raise funds for renovation and remind the public of its presence. It has launched a virtual sale of tiles from the roof of the unique building on the internet. This was reported by the AFP agency.
Since Monday, interested parties can purchase some of the 125,000 tiles from the highest "sail" of the Sydney Opera. One of the first buyers was Hollywood star Hugh Jackman.
"The opera is a masterpiece on the UNESCO World Heritage list that belongs to all of us," Jackman, who lives in Sydney, stated. "The Own Our House initiative is a great way for people to express their pride and love for one of the most significant buildings in the world," he added.
The organizers of the Own Our House event hope to raise 15 million Australian dollars (273 million CZK) in this way for the renovation of the complex and to secure funding for free public events, AFP reported.
For 100 to 400 Australian dollars (1820 to 7280 CZK), interested parties can purchase one of the virtual tiles, which they can choose themselves online. They will then be able to place their photo and message on it, share it on social networks, and will also be able to become a member of a virtual community of tile owners and search for other "roommates."
