Barcelona - In Barcelona, the first vertical forest was ceremoniously unveiled, which according to its authors is the only one of its kind in the world. Trees of various species are suspended on a wall that is 12 meters high and 50 meters long, creating a unique spectacle. The nature-architectural project also serves an educational function, allowing visitors to see how trees "grow" both above and below the ground, reported the Spanish media.
The so-called vertical forest project is a joint effort of the Barcelona City Hall and the La Caixa Foundation, which commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Caixaforum Barcelona cultural center.
The special forest is located on the wall of the exhibition palace on Montjuic Hill, and so far, only nine trees, each weighing five tons, are suspended over an area of about 535 square meters. However, seeds of other trees are also planted there; a total of 19,000 specimens of a hundred different species are expected to grow, including olive, pomegranate, cypress, hazel, willow, and black and white poplar.
Over a hundred experts contributed to the project, including gardeners, agricultural engineers, and architects.
