Brno - Brno wants to protect the Lesná housing estate from destructive influences that further construction could have on its appearance. Architects are to prepare a study that would become a binding land-use planning basis and would prevent, for example, the construction of new tower blocks. The city council announced a tender for the urban study in these days. The materials could be completed in the summer, and in September, the result would be discussed with the public.
Lesná, which is more than forty years old, is considered unique. The housing estate was created in the 1960s and 1970s after the model of the Finnish town of Tapiola near Helsinki. It was exceptional even then for its proportion of greenery, which is now the highest among housing estates in the country. The massive panel buildings with a view of Brno today essentially stand in a quiet park, and additionally, the trees have grown so much in the past 40 years that they obscure the view of many buildings.
Today, about 15,000 people live in Lesná. Due to the uniqueness of the housing estate, they strive to achieve the status of a heritage zone.
In the urban study, architects are to address the regeneration of the buildings and set conditions for possible extensions and completions. They are to propose future solutions for shops, medical offices, and other services, as well as check whether it would be possible to place a swimming pool in the housing estate. They should address greenery, public transport, and parking, and propose locations for the construction of public garages.
Lesná consists of bulky panel buildings as well as smaller constructions built along the contours of the slope. The area is valued for its view of the city and its southern orientation. In the center of the area lies the Rokle city park.
