New Jičín has a renovated market

Nový Jičín - The newly reconstructed Municipal Market has recently opened in Nový Jičín. The old army structure from the late 1970s has been replaced by special tarpaulin resembling medieval giant tents. The renovation of the market cost the city 16 million crowns, said city hall spokesman Josef Gabzdyl today.
"Instead of the heavy structure of the previous market, we chose a light and airy design with coated fabric that can withstand even windy gusts," explained the new appearance of the market by Brno architect Pavel Pekár. People do not have to worry that the tarp will get dirty or collapse under snow accumulations. "According to the manufacturer of the special tarp, rain will wash away all the dirt. Inside the tubes, there are resistance wires, so snow will soon melt and water will drain into the sewer," explained Pekár.
The renovated market is located at the intersection of Resslova and Úzká streets. A few years ago, it was originally planned to demolish it and build on the gap. However, the option of modernizing the facility ultimately prevailed. In addition to the new structure and tarp, the entire space has new paving, the social background for vendors has been modernized, wooden tables have been replaced with stainless ones, and the market is well-lit.
The nearby passage along the city wall has also completely changed. Instead of several parking spaces, there is now a relaxation area with benches.
After four months of reconstruction, vendors have already returned to the market from their temporary space, selling mainly their own produce such as vegetables, fruits, or juices. "There is great interest in places in the new market," said Gabzdyl. One table per day costs 72 crowns if the vendor wants to sell food or floral goods. If they sell industrial goods, such as clothing or toys, they will pay 142 crowns. Prices are the same as in the old market. The city also offers monthly, quarterly, or annual rent.
The market has earned several nicknames among people due to its unconventional architectural solution, such as Humberto, little Temelín, or great Pagoda. "Citizens will definitely discuss the architectural solution, it is unconventional. Many people tell me that they did not like the new structure much during construction, but once it was finished, they completely changed their minds," said the mayor of the city Ivan Týle.
