Lectures

Mařena is a traditional happening of the students of the Faculty of Architecture. No one really knows what Mařena truly means and under what circumstances it originated, but its principles have been passed down among students for many years. It is always organized by fourth-year students, who have their last semester before their bachelor's thesis. However, first-year students play a central role—through this process (baptism), they are accepted into the academic community.
This year's theme of Mařena is "Buried in Waste." Society is drowning in the overproduction of things that we might use only once and then throw away. Our homes are buried in trash that we really don't need. The PET bottle is a symbol of this futility. Humanity produces plastics, and the end of the world will probably come when we all choke on them. But it's not just about ecology. Waste is produced everywhere. Not least of all in architecture. The suburbs of our cities are buried under the architecture of catalog dreams. The more colorful, the better; the more dormers, the happier the life. And a couple of plaster gnomes in the garden only sanctify this dream of paradise.

Mařena is also characterized by the decoration of the school. Students always decorate the building of the Faculty of Architecture according to the central theme. This year's organizers tried to use materials that would otherwise end up in the trash. A month before Mařena, they collected cups from Brno's canteens, washed them, and prepared structures that you can see in the school hallways starting Monday, November 5. They also gathered PET bottles, old newspapers, toilet paper rolls, cans, and more. They used scraps from construction activities at the faculty and created furniture from them. Thirty new chairs made from old parquet are now newly available in the school bar. The mission of this year's Mařena is: "By recycling and living more responsibly, quality can be created!"
