Brno - The Brno Public Transport Company is preparing a transformation of the Pisárky tram depot next year for 390 million crowns. The work is expected to be completed by 2020. The oldest tram depot in Brno will have a new hall for daily cleaning and maintenance of the trams, part of the tracks will be covered, and a washing station will be built, spokesperson Barbora Lukšová told ČTK. The goal is to simplify daily handling of the vehicles and improve facilities for the workers.

The hall will be located in part of the depot near the track between Mendlovo náměstí and the Pisárky stop, and access will be from the exhibition grounds. "Unsuitable working conditions were pointed out during the spring safety and health checks," said Lukšová. The hall will be equipped with modern technologies for daily maintenance, which will also speed up the care of the trams after their evening arrival at the depot. Workers will also have new technological facilities to check the electrical equipment on the roof and to diagnose wheels and gears.

The tracks will be covered between the existing and new halls. "In the old hall, a channel on one track will also be removed, and in its place, a washing station will be created," said Lukšová.

The modernization of the depot was initiated by the transport company last year when it expanded the track layout for tram parking. There is also a plan for a third phase in the coming years, which includes a new loop, a new track towards the exhibition grounds, and the construction of a cable car to the Bohunice campus.

The Pisárecká depot was established in 1870, a year after the start of the horse tram operation. It served as a feed storage and stable for horses. The first renovation took place in the mid-1880s when steam trams began operating in Brno, and since 1900, electric trams have been stationed here. The current appearance is largely post-war.
