Brno - In Brno today, an update to the zoning plan has come into effect, against which activists plan to file a lawsuit with the Regional Court in Brno in September. They criticize the current form of the plan for threatening green spaces in the city and legalizing illegal constructions, said Hana Chalupská from the NESEHNUTÍ movement to ČTK. Deputy Mayor Ladislav Macek (ČSSD), who was responsible for preparing the update proposal, is not afraid of the lawsuit. He believes the change is correct and beneficial for the city.
    The Brno councilors approved the update at a June meeting. The city posted it on the official notice board 15 days ago. "In recent days, many companies and individuals who have issues with the plan update have approached us. We are coordinating everything with them and will turn to the court in September," Chalupská stated.
    According to her, hundreds of companies, property owners, dozens of public representatives, and local councils from some city districts opposed the update. "More than 2500 citizens appealed to the city hall through web portals prepared by NESEHNUTÍ and other civic initiatives. The most significant objections were directed at the cancellation of the protection of green areas in the city, the cancellation of the protection of courtyards from development and parking lots, and against the legalization of illegal constructions," Chalupská listed.
    The opposition Green Party supports the activists in the lawsuit, having fought against the update proposal for a long time. "We want the court to review whether the document is in accordance with the law. In our opinion, it is not," said Martin Ander, the head of the Brno Greens. He added that the update favors developers and certain landowners.
    However, Macek rejects this and claims that the plan does not advantage anyone. "We prepared the update for the benefit of the city. I believe it can withstand scrutiny in court," Macek told ČTK. "It is unfortunate for Brno that certain entities with an economic interest want to contest the validity of the plan change," Macek added.
    The update changed a 20-year-old zoning plan. The city hall responded to the current needs of the city until a new zoning plan can be prepared.
