Brno - The representatives of Brno today approved a proposal to update the Brno urban plan. 34 representatives out of a total of 55 raised their hands in favor of the change. TOP 09 and the Green Party were mainly opposed. Activists who came to the meeting with banners against the update also disagreed with the proposal. The proposal will change a 20-year-old plan. Thanks to the approval, the development of the city will not stop, said Mayor Roman Onderka to ČTK. Activists will not give up even after the approval and intend to defend themselves through legal means. Opponents of the approved proposal claim that changes to the urban plan will allow the legalization of illegal constructions, the construction of shops in green areas, or the appreciation of developers' land. According to Mayor Roman Onderka, the representatives' decision was correct. "In a period when we cannot make a new urban plan due to the questioning of the superior South Moravian urban plan in court, we had to find a way to continue the development of Brno," Onderka said. The update, according to him, addresses greenery, parking, communications, and the method of building in the city. "The changes will allow us to move a little further so that Brno can function normally until a new urban plan is created," the mayor stated. Activists, the Greens, and TOP 09 pointed out that the plan has many flaws. "The update will allow the legalization of illegal constructions, but also the construction of shops in green areas or tall buildings," said opposition representative Martin Ander (SZ). Opposition representatives evaluated the proposal as unclear. "It's hard to navigate in it, and it favors some developers without the local people knowing about it," stated Jaroslav Kacer (TOP 09). However, according to Onderka, it is possible to navigate in the plan, which has more than 10,000 pages and nearly 1,000 maps. "It is not perfect and perhaps it could be better worked out, but nothing is perfect, and I can certainly find everything I need in it and see how things were before and how they are now," Onderka added. However, for activists, nothing ends with the approval. "We are expecting an analysis of the most significant errors, and we will defend ourselves through legal means. There is nothing else that can be done about it," said Hana Kašpaříková on behalf of the activists to ČTK. Civic initiatives will be supported by the Green Party, which believes that the document is contrary to the law. The update modified the 20-year-old plan of Brno and aimed to adapt the city to the present time. The municipality received around 2000 comments related to the proposal, and another approximately the same number of comments lacked the necessary requirements.
