Brno - The first completed pillars for the future road viaduct are already in place at the former Židenice barracks and its surroundings in Brno, along with scaffolding for the continuation of this technically demanding project. The concreting of the first bridge deck fields has already begun. The viaduct will consist of 40 fields and 37 pillars are needed, said Lucie Trubelíková, spokesperson for the Brno office of the Road and Motorway Directorate.
Currently, the builders are drilling in the railway bed, over which the viaduct will run; the second field of the bridge deck will be concreted on Wednesday, and the pillars are being constructed further. "The bridge deck is the load-bearing structure of the bridge, on which we will then place the layers of the roadway – the bearing and the wearing," stated Trubelíková. The viaduct will begin to rise behind the bridge over the Svitava River and will end under the Vinohrady housing estate at Rokytova Street. In the future, the city ring road is expected to continue with a tunnel beneath the housing estate and further south.
This week, the old bridge over the Svitava River in Provazníková Street will also start to disappear. Workers will gradually dismantle the girder of the left part of the bridge, but transport will not be restricted yet. However, on Friday, Dolnopolní Street will be closed in the section under the bridge, and on Saturday, traffic will be partially restricted on the bridge while maintaining passability. On the night of Sunday, traffic on the bridge will cease, and drivers will have to detour via the Maloměřický Bridge. "We will begin major demolition work on the bridge after the construction of the temporary bridge. The start is expected in early May," said Trubelíková.
The new section of the city ring road, which will connect to the exit from the Husovické tunnels and end at the intersection with Rokytova Street under the Vinohrady housing estate, is expected to be completed by mid-2024. The cost of the construction is nearly 2.5 billion crowns.
