Brno - The second phase of the construction of the Brno large city ring road in the section Žabovřeská is set to begin in the spring of next year. This section extends from the Kamenomlýnský Bridge to the Hlinky intersection, making it a more technically demanding segment than the first phase. A new tram tunnel and a road running alongside the riverbank are part of the second phase, said David Fiala, director of the Brno branch of the Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD), at a press conference today. The first phase has been under construction since last autumn, and the entire Žabovřeská road with four lanes is expected to open by the end of 2023.

The estimated cost of the second phase is 1.6 billion crowns. "We will open the envelopes with bids in November. We now have all the valid building permits and have avoided the delays that affected the start of the first phase," Fiala recalled the appeal by the Voda z Tetčic association.

For drivers, the start of the second phase will not mean any restrictions. They will pass through the construction site, but still in one lane in each direction. However, the construction will significantly impact people who take trams from Bystrce and Komín to Pisárky and Mendlovo Square. Likely starting in September next year, trams will not run between the Vozovna Komín and Pisárky stops for another two years. The measures related to the service interruption will be presented by the transport company just before it starts.

During the second phase, the company will build a half-kilometer tunnel for trams and 370 meters of noise barriers. The city will construct new sidewalks in the area and plant new greenery. A new feature will also be a bridge allowing pedestrians and cyclists to travel from Svratka to Žabovřesky and Wilson's Forest.

By the end of November, the Kníničská grade-separated junction is also expected to be fully operational, allowing travel from Pisárky to Bystrce. In January, a new service road will be opened, which will once again allow travel from Bystrce to Pisárky; currently, the old access to the city ring road is closed. "We expect the entire first phase to be completed by the end of next year," Fiala stated. Its cost is 415 million crowns, with approximately a quarter covered by the city.

The city will also renovate the chapel of Saint Anthony, and according to Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS), it could, after an agreement with Bishop Vojtěch Cikrle, also be newly consecrated to Saint Barbara.

Next year, the ŘSD also plans to start construction of another part of the city ring road in the sections Tomkovo náměstí and Rokytova. This section connects with the Husovice tunnels, allowing drivers heading towards Vinohrady to bypass the congested intersection at Stará osada. In about six to seven years, the ŘSD aims to start work on the Vinohradský tunnel as well.
