Zdeněk Fránek / Too Visible Architecture + Piotr Brzoza / Building Pragmatically

Thursday, June 1, 2017 / 7:30 PM

DUP36, Charvátova 10, Prague 1

Zdeněk Fránek / Too Visible Architecture
The lecture Too Visible Architecture will guide through the author's architectural principles from recent years. It will display methods that are sometimes contradictory and seemingly self-contradictory, but always leading to a unified conception of space. He will express thoughts on the identification of the laws governing such created space.
Zdeněk Fránek was born in 1961 in Boskovice. He currently engages in design, publishing, and educational activities. In 1989, he founded the firm Fránek Architects. Since 2012, he has been the dean of the Faculty of Art and Architecture at the Technical University in Liberec. He regularly presents his work at exhibitions. His "Sky Trail" in Dolní Morava was declared the Building of the Year 2016.

Piotr Brzoza / Building Pragmatically
A significant architect with Polish roots will present his projects in the lecture and discuss his multi-layered pragmatic approach to the design process. He considers this approach a reasonable alternative to the prevailing strategies in 20th-century architecture – namely, the monotonous unified dimensionality of functionalism and the random and decadent formal experiments of postmodernism. “The practice of subsequent overlapping logical conclusions from various aspects and fields opens up the possibility not only for a new and unexpected architectural surplus but primarily for the rehabilitation of the professional credibility of architects,” says Piotr Brzoza regarding the topic of the lecture.
Piotr Brzoza was born in 1975 in Wrocław. He studied architecture at RWTH Aachen University and ETH Zurich. He has worked, among others, for b&k+ Brandlhuber in Cologne and Diener&Diener Architekten in Basel. Since 2011, he has been running his own architectural practice in Basel, and since 2016, he has had an office, XM Architekten, together with Daniel Kiss. Among his interesting projects is a house with a studio in Warsaw, which was nominated by the Polish jury for the Mies van der Rohe Award. He also drew attention with a house for Polish conceptual artist Pawel Althamer. He designed an extension to the existing house, to which he added a golden object. This refers to the artist's famous performance in which he dressed the performers (social sculptures) in golden space suits and let them travel to various corners of the world to promote Polish history.
