On Thursday, November 24, at 6:00 PM, there will be a lecture titled Jack Self: The Real Review at Galerie VI PER, the second in the Visiting Editors series. On Friday, November 25, at 6:00 PM, there will be a second meeting with Jack Self and Mária Topolčanská at the Brno cultural space PRAHA / Forum for Architecture and Media. Jack Self will speak about his independent magazine Real Review and about “what it means to live today”. The lecture also serves as the launch of the new – second – issue of Real Review, which is published in November.

Jack Self (1987) is an architect and journalist living in London. He runs the REAL (Real Estate Architecture Laboratory) foundation and is the editor-in-chief of the magazine Real Review. In 2016, he was the curator of the British Pavilion titled Home Economics at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. His writings have been published in periodicals such as The Guardian, 032c, New Philosopher, and BBC News, and he regularly writes for Architectural Review. During his studies at the AA School of Architecture in London, he founded Fulcrum, an independent student weekly on architecture. He is the author of the book Real Estates: Life Without Debt (2014).

The magazine Real Review is published quarterly and is the flagship publication of the REAL foundation. Real Review explores what it means to live today through analysis, evaluation, and investigation. The graphic design of the magazine comes from the studio OK-RM.
“We provide informed and engaged reviews on architecture – from the housing crisis to technologies of mass surveillance – which explore how design shapes society.” (from the RR crowdfunding campaign)
“Making something accessible to the public does not mean condescension or a uniform tone. Each issue should have articles aimed at all reading levels: from those with no knowledge of architecture to those who have practiced architecture for decades. This removes barriers for the casual reader and allows them to enter the world of architecture without these articles being dull or generic for architects themselves.” (RR for itsnicethat.com)

Visiting Editors is a series of lectures, discussions, and readings on alternative models of publishing in architecture.
Project curator: Maria Topolčanská / Fake Cities True Stories.
Organized by: PRAHA / Forum for Architecture and Media and VI PER.
The lecture series is accompanied by a pop-up reading room with a curated selection of contemporary editorial projects from local scenes.
The lecture will be in English.
