In Germany, since August 2013, there has been a legal entitlement to a place in kindergarten for children from one year old, which has required cities and municipalities to create hundreds of thousands of new places, resulting in investments of over four billion euros (approximately 103 billion CZK). To accommodate all applicants, kindergartens had to increase the number of available places to a total minimum of 780,000 by the autumn of 2013, while in 2012 there were only 558,000 places in kindergartens across Germany, making it an unattainable dream for many to place a child in a municipal facility, especially in large urban centers in the west of the country. Now, over 810,000 places are to be made available!
The related construction or expansion of educational facilities presents an opportunity for modular construction, which is popular in Germany and has undeniable advantages over traditional construction. This is particularly true regarding the speed of production and the progress of construction work, easy expansion or raising to a higher floor, and last but not least, the possibility of disassembly and reassembly at another location according to current needs based on the number of children. The colorful solutions for the exterior cladding, as well as the irregular arrangement of the individual modules, make these buildings architecturally interesting in terms of harmony with the surroundings. More and more municipalities and city councils (as the founders of these facilities) in Germany are leaning towards this quick construction option, effectively turn-key. The company Fagus a.s. from Slusovice has been very successful in the German market for a long time, having built dozens of new kindergartens in recent years.
Two examples from the autumn of 2012 are inspiring. In July 2012, Fagus completed the construction of a private kindergarten in Cologne that expanded the capacity of the existing massive building. Gradually, 60 to 75 children found their place here, moving into a neighboring renovated old villa connected by a glass passage to a two-story assembly of Fagus modules. The new kindergarten is located at a right angle to the villa and catches the eye with its beautiful wooden facade, as well as its pleasant interior furnishings - including sanitary facilities specifically designed for kindergartens. Construction began in the first week of June 2012, and by the end of July, the kindergarten was completed. Therefore, the construction period did not exceed eight weeks.
Thanks to the new legally mandated entitlement to a place in a preschool facility, Fagus also has additional projects for kindergartens underway in the same region, with others in the negotiation and obtaining permits phase.
The speed of construction of kindergartens from Fagus modules was also evident in a kindergarten for approximately 40 children in Freital near Dresden. Another modular preschool facility project was successfully handed over for use at the beginning of October; the first ceremonial "groundbreaking" was made at the end of July, containers were delivered at the end of August, and during September, both the internal and external construction work, carried out by local construction companies, were completed. As the locals say: "…it doesn’t look like a construction made of container modules from the outside at all."
