Brno - The multifunctional hall being built in the grounds of the Brno exhibition center is under roof; workers are only finishing the cladding of the canopies on the outside. All other construction activities have moved indoors, said Petr Kratochvíl (ODS), chairman of the board of the municipal company Arena Brno and councilor, to ČTK. The construction, costing approximately five billion crowns, is scheduled to open in the fall.
"Work is fully concentrated indoors, and the building is heated to allow construction to continue even in freezing weather. Currently, the load-bearing structures are completely finished, workers are working on drywall constructions and pouring floors. At the same time, they are focusing on the installation of heating, cooling, air conditioning, electrical installations, and other technical systems," Kratochvíl stated.
The construction of the municipal hall started in September 2023. The original costs were 4.4 billion crowns but have gradually increased by about half a billion. Additional hundreds of millions of crowns will be needed for the arena's equipment. The municipal company is now finalizing the selection of suppliers for the lighting of the dominant zones, information technologies, and cybersecurity, special audiovisual and stage technologies, interiors, orientation systems, and catering services.
Once completed, the building will offer 30 different types of use, have a capacity of up to 13,000 spectators, and 1,300 parking spaces. Around 100 events are expected to be held there annually. Over 60 percent of the program will consist of concerts featuring Czech and world music names, family shows, and other cultural events. A significant portion will be dedicated to sports. The arena will be home to the Kometa Brno hockey club.
