BIG is the Copenhagen-based association of 85 architects, designers, builders, and philosophers working in the fields of architecture, urbanism, research, and development.
Historically, architecture has been dominated by two opposing extremes. On one side was the avant-garde full of crazy ideas arising from philosophical foundations, mysticism, or fascination with the possibilities of computer representations, which are often detached from reality, resulting in little more than eccentric curiosities. On the other side are well-organized corporations that build predictable and boring boxes to a high standard. Architecture seems to be cultivated in two equally barren soils: it is either utopically naive or rigidly factual. We believe that between these diametrical opposites lies a third way or a small but very fertile area of overlap between these two approaches. Pragmatic utopian architecture, which aims to create socially, economically, and environmentally perfect places. In our projects, we explore the effects of scale and the balance of programmatic mixtures on social, economic, and ecological outcomes. By mixing traditional ingredients such as housing, leisure, work, parking, and shopping, we achieve an architecture that is the result of programmatic alchemy. Each construction site is a testing ground for its own pragmatic utopian experiment. At BIG, we are dedicated to exploring places that operate between the radical and the real. Choosing between one of them condemns you to a powerless martyrdom or apathetic self-assurance. By aiming for the fertile ground where both paths overlap, we architects find freedom to change the surface of our planet into a place that better suits how we want to live. In all our actions, we strive to focus from small details to the magnificent overall picture.
