Grand Prix Architects 2019 - The National Award for Architecture has a record 321 submitted works in this year's 26th edition and is already the largest architectural exhibition in the Czech Republic for the second consecutive year. As every year, a five-member jury composed of prominent international personalities in architecture and one jury member from the Czech Republic will evaluate the works. This year, the jury will convene in the following composition:
Fabrizio Barozzi / Spain - Estudio Barozzi Veiga Irena Fialová / Czech Republic - Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Architecture CTU Matúš Vallo / Slovakia - Mayor of Bratislava Daniel Zarhy / Israel - Studio PeZ Bolle Tham / Sweden - Tham & Videgård Arkitekter
During August, the jury will evaluate the works and nominate a shortlist, which will be published by September 15, 2019.
A new feature of this year's edition is the Grand Prix Festival, which will take place at the Faculty of Architecture CTU on October 1, 2019, on the occasion of the International Day of Architecture. The nominated architects will briefly present their works in person, in the presence of jury members and faculty students from SPA (Architecture Student Association). 10 minutes will be allocated for their presentation and 10 minutes for answering questions. During this time, questions can only be asked by jurors and representatives of SPA. The founding partner for the establishment of the festival is the company Grohe.
On the eve of the festival, on September 30, 2019, at 5:00 PM, there will be an opening of an exhibition featuring all submitted works for the GPA 2019 - National Award for Architecture in front of the Faculty of Architecture CTU in Dejvice.
The GPA 2019 awards will be presented by the jury at its closed meeting on October 2, 2019. This includes the “big blue cube” for the overall winner of the GPA. In the individual categories (new construction, reconstruction, family house, and architectural design and artistic work in architecture), small “blue cubes” are awarded. A new feature of this 26th edition is the “small yellow cube” for the best interior, “small green cube” for landscape architecture and garden design, and “small purple cube” for the best urban planning.
Apart from these awards, the jury may grant honorary mentions at its discretion.
The “big red cube” for lifetime achievement will be awarded exclusively by the Council of the Architects' Association. The members of the Council OA are Vladimíra Leníčková, Zorka Krejčí, Václav Mastný, Karel Smejkal, and Oleg Haman.
The basic conditions for submitting projects to the GPA are:
1. Decision of the author to submit the project 2. Implementation on the territory of the Czech Republic 3. Completion deadline for the construction - occupancy permit from January 1, 2018, to March 31, 2019. An exception is made for urban projects and landscape design, where the completion guide is the last five years, that is, from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2018.
The ceremonial announcement of the results will take place on October 3, 2019, in the Pantheon of the newly reconstructed building of the National Museum at 7:00 PM.
The author of the glass cube is Bohumil Eliáš senior – a Czech glass artist, which after his death is produced by his son Bohumil Eliáš junior.
