The exhibition named Fabrika will present all projects created at the faculty during the winter semester on Thursday, January 16, 2020, starting at 6:00 PM. With its scale and area, it is the largest event of its kind in the Czech Republic. Over 1,000 semester projects from the fields of Architecture and Urbanism, Design, and Landscape Architecture will be displayed in 56 studios across seven floors.
Fabrika is one of the most prominent public events of the year at the faculty. What precedes the exhibition? In addition to compulsory lectures, at the beginning of each semester, students also choose a studio. They decide based on its assignments, which are always different, and according to the studio leader. This is followed by a portfolio interview. If accepted, the student spends the entire semester working on the assigned topic, seeking information, researching the location, and participating in workshops and excursions. Then they will have hours in workshops where they create a model of their design, attend classes in the studio, click the mouse on computers, and engage in discussions with the studio leader and peers. The work culminates in a joint exhibition directly in the studio and assessments, known as critiques.
What topics do the studios cover? Here, students engage in creating space, searching for suitable shapes and materials for their designs. Many work with the overlap of architecture into other fields and offer possible answers to current social issues. "The studio project work is the most important, time-consuming, and at the same time the most prestigious part of the students' studies," says one of them, Marek Wagner.
In the studios of Kohout - Tichý and Stempel - Beneš, students explored the potential of the area around the new metro station D in Prague 4 - Libuš. In the studio of conservator architect Václav Girsa, they developed designs for the restoration and extension of the former monastery complex in Tuchoměřice. In the studio of Fingerová - Grohmannová, they rehabilitated the Central Park of the Ďáblice housing estate, or they worked with glass in the Karel studio. "We received a glass plate measuring 700x700x4 mm and had to design something using it. Some broke the plate and then glued it into a bowl from its pieces, while I cut the plate into rectangular strips, which I layered on top of each other, creating interesting effects through light and reflections," says design student Emma Závodská.
According to the explanatory dictionary, a factory is a large industrial building where people manually or with machines produce goods in large quantities. "The Fabrika in the case of the Faculty of Architecture CTU is an exhibition of products from the factory of architecture," says Filip Chládek from the Student Association of Architecture.
The exhibition of studio projects can be viewed at any time during the faculty's opening hours from January 14 to 24, 2020. The Faculty of Architecture CTU, Thákurova 9, Prague 6, is open from Monday to Friday between 6:30 AM and 10:00 PM, and on Saturdays between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. Entry to the event is free.
