WARSAW, October 4 (ČTK) - The famous American architect of Polish origin Daniel Libeskind has designed a tower block in the center of Warsaw with a height of 192 meters. It will be located directly opposite the famous Palace of Culture. This was announced today according to the AFP agency by the Luxembourg group Orco Property Group, which is financing the project.
"Daniel Libeskind, who was born in Łódź, wanted to create something in Poland. He had a great motivation for this project," said investor representative Jean-Claude Moustacakis to AFP.
The fully glass building in the shape of a sail will have 45 floors. At the very top of the skyscraper, a crown and a white eagle, the Polish national symbol, will be placed. "I designed the building to be different in every way," Libeskind told the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza. "By being completely glass, it will feel lighter, as if it were sailing through the air," the architect added.
Construction of the skyscraper is expected to begin next year and could be ceremoniously opened in 2008.
The controversial Palace of Culture, built during communism, will remain the tallest building in Poland. It still measures a respectable 230 meters.
Libeskind was born in Poland in 1946, but left his homeland with his parents, who emigrated to Israel and later to the United States. He obtained American citizenship in 1965.
The architect gained worldwide fame, among other things, for the construction of the Jewish Museum in Berlin and the design of the Freedom Tower, which is set to stand on the site of the destroyed World Trade Center (WTC) in Lower Manhattan, New York City.
