Fans of the Chelsea football club can look forward to a new sanctuary. The author is the Swiss studio Herzog & de Meuron, which has previously realized iconic stadiums in Basel, Munich, Bordeaux, and Beijing.
Twelve years ago, Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich bought FC Chelsea for a quarter billion euros and invested another billion in player acquisitions. The history of Stamford Bridge stadium in the Fulham district of West London dates back to 1877. Chelsea has been playing on the local pitch since 1905, and the last significant reconstruction took place a quarter of a century ago. A completely new construction is now planned, which will increase the capacity by nearly twenty thousand seats to a final total of 60,000 seated spectators. Abramovich has allocated a budget of 850 million euros for this purpose. Unlike the pneumatic structure in Munich or the forest of slender pillars in Bordeaux, the London stadium made of brick resembles more a medieval cathedral or an ancient coliseum. The elevated arcade running around the perimeter helps to soften the scale of the stadium within the surrounding buildings.
Demolition will begin next year, and the first matches at the new stadium will take place in the 2020/21 season. The design has already earned nicknames such as "ashtray" or "egg slicer."
