Přerov - Next week, architecture students will head to Přerov to help the city find a use for the abandoned eight-story Strojař hotel located near the city center. The building could be obtained by the city from the Ministry of Defense for free, provided that a publicly beneficial use is found for it. Many suggestions have already been sent to the city hall by residents as well. They would like, for example, to have the city hall or a care home in the building. Some propose to demolish the structure as well. Due to the free transfer, city representatives must find an appropriate use by the end of March.

Young architects will stay in the city for four days starting Thursday. Their task will be to design how to utilize the panel hotel building, as well as the adjacent restaurant and civil defense shelter. "Of course, they will have consultations with a structural engineer, firefighters, and a hygiene representative to have a clear idea of what is, or is not, practically possible to design," stated Přerov councilor and architect Jan Horký. Next Sunday, they will present their visions to the residents of Přerov. The public presentation will take place in the meeting room on Smetanova Street, and their work will subsequently be displayed in the exhibition hall in the Passage and on the city website www.prerov.eu.
Strojař was built in the 1970s and served as starter apartments for employees of the Přerov engineering works. Later, it was partly used as a hotel building, and in recent years it was occupied by soldiers stationed at the Přerov airport. After their departure to Náměšť nad Oslavou, the building became deserted, and the Ministry of Defense has been trying to sell it since 2013. The original price of 62 million crowns has gradually dropped to 46.5 million crowns.
The city is trying to acquire the building out of concern that it could turn into another hostel, of which there are already two dozen in the city. The new city leadership successfully negotiated a free transfer at the end of last year, but the condition is to find a publicly beneficial use for Strojař. By the end of March, when the city must submit its proposals to the Ministry of Defense, the ministry will not offer Strojař for sale. The representatives of Přerov also received preliminary consent for such a transaction from the Ministry of Finance.
